Jaringan Buruh Migran Visited Kemenakertrans and BNP2TKI

Consolidation meeting which was hosted by The Institute for National and Democratic Studies (INDIES) on 29 November until 1 December 2011 concluded with a visit to Directorate General of Mannpower’s Training and Placement (Dirjen Binapenta) on the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration Republic of Indonesia and the National Board of Migrant’s Placement and Protection or “Badan Nasional Penempatan dan Perlindungan Tenaga Kerja Indonesia” (BNP2TKI) at Southern Jakarta (01/12).

Consolidation for the Truly Protection for Indonesian migrant workers was held in Wisma Hijau, Depok succeeded to resolute a synergic movement among Indonesian migrant workers union in and outside Indonesia in a newly born “Jaringan Buruh Migran Indonesia” (Indonesian Migrant Worker’s Network).

This network represents 17 different associations and organization which was invited to the forum which are IMWU Hong Kong, IMWU Macau, ATKI Hong Kong, ATKI Macau, ATKI Indonesia, ATKI West Nusa Tenggara, ATKI Madura, Migrant Trade Union Korea, ATKI Taiwan, IFN Singapore, SBMI, SBMI East Java, SPPQT Salatiga, Family of Ruyati, Indonesian seamen in Taiwan and New Zealand, Indies, and the Indonesian Migrant Worker Resources Union.

All the participants were divided into two major groups to explore deepen views of different locations. Retno Dewi, activist from ATKI Indonesia was the spoke person in Ministry of Manpower, while Sring Atin from IMWU Hong Kong was the spoke person in BNP2TKI.

Two different groups addressed two institutions according to their authority of migrant worker’s issue. The problem of working placement and Indonesian seamen being the major point to be addressed by Retno and friends, while Sring Atin and others focused on Migrant Workers Identity Card or “Kartu Tenaga Kerja Luar Negeri” (KTKLN) and the existence of Centre of Migrant Workers Database in the Terminal 4 Soekarno Hatta Airport.

The meeting with person in charge at two major institutions which related to the protection of migrant worker in Indonesia was really strategic and rare event. Aside of to be face to face with them, listening their verbal statement towards migrant’s issues, this meeting also facilitate a direct communication among public servant and government authority with representatives of Indonesian migrant worker’s union to addressed their problem directly.
