The Institute of National and Democratic Studies (Indies) Jakarta supported by Tifa Foundation was facilitated a consolidation meeting of Indonesian migrants union from Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, which also attended by some other institutions and NGO which put concerns on migrants issue (29/11/11).
Representative of destination countries addressed the meeting and shared about current condition of the protection of Indonesian migrant workers in every destination country.
“In Macau, we don’t have any regulation concerning minimum wages for any kind of job for locals and foreigners. We don’t have Indonesian consulate in Macau, and things are getting harder when Government of Macau has ever being repressive on responding union activities. This circumstance left us unprotected and,” said Fitri Wahyu, Head of Indonesian Migran Workers (IMWU) Macau.
Different country has different problems and regulations. Representatives from IMWU Hong Kong, Asosiasi Tenaga Kerja Indonesia/Association of Indonesian Migrant Workers (ATKI) Taiwan, Indonesian Family Network (IFN) Singapore, Serikat Buruh Migran Indonesia, and Migrants Trade Union (MTU) Korea also addressed their problems in their country.
“This kind of consolidation for migrant workers union is essentials and shall be strengthen by time,” said Ario, Director of Indies during the meeting.
The movements of migrant worker unions also need supports in order to strengthen cooperation and gain more protection for Indonesian migrants from the government.
