Kartini Day Celebration by Indonesian Migrant Workers in Hong Kong

Author

Peringatan Hari Kartini di Hong KongIn May 2 1964, President Soekarno made a Presidential Decree No. 108 of the Year 1964 which establishing Kartini as a National Heroine as well as ordering for Kartini’s birthday, April 21st, to be celebrated every year.

Kartini Day isn’t only celebrated in Indonesia, but also abroad. Kartini Day celebration every April 21st is also done by Indonesian citizens in Hong Kong who are mostly female migrant workers. Sunday, 22 April 2012 in Victoria Park field, Causway Bay, the Indonesian Migrant Workers (BMI) from various organizations held oration contest, fashion show contest and song composing contest.

One by one, BMIs who joined the contest showcased her ability in giving an oration vigorously and rearranging songs into patriotic songs, before being followed by fashion show. Although the BMIs are far from Indonesia, they don’t forget their heroine, Raden Ajeng Kartini, who during her lifetime had fought for women.

Like RA Kartini’s struggle, female migrant workers are their families’ heroines as well as the driving forces of their area and the country. Although to this day, a true protection for BMI hasn’t been realized, their struggle to voice their rights will never cease.

Hopefully the Kartinis who become migrant workers and struggle for their families at home can be strong and continue to fight for their people, migrant workers who are still suppressed by the authority.

Happy Kartini Day.
